“This project has improved the attractiveness and usability of Market Hill. We engaged with all stakeholders and after exploring the feasibility options, designed a scheme that has enhanced the centre of Brandon. The area offers a safe and secure, yet attractive environment that offers an array of meeting places while providing plenty of space for local market stalls, community festivals and events.” - Elizabeth Adams, Senior Landscape Architect, Concertus
The Brief: This scheme was part of the Brandon Centre project and was a precursor to other improvement projects that aimed to raise the condition of the town centre and enhance facilities. The aim was to enhance the public space, thereby increasing its attractiveness for public pedestrian use. There was also a need to improve the setting of the old Primary School buildings and hence give a significant sense of improvement to Brandon Town Centre.
The Scope: With a very small budget, we proposed improvements to increase the usability of Market Hill as a pedestrian space, rather than a car park. We designed a scheme that offered meeting places, a social and street fair/market place forum and enhanced the visual centre of Brandon and its local shops and cafes whilst providing a safe and secure environment.
Our approach provided two options for consultation and we engaged with all stakeholders including the public, Forest Heath District Council, Brandon Town Council and Suffolk County Council, as well as the market stall users and adjacent businesses. Our approach allowed full feasibility to be explored with some items master planned for future development.
The Result: The scheme has uplifted the urban environment of Market Hill with seating, trees and planters and has enabled increased usage for pedestrians. The area not only provides an attractive place for sitting and sharing the time of day, but also provides space for use by the local market stalls and for community festivals and events.
