Principal Structural Engineer

To lead a team of Structural and Civil Engineers and manage structural design projects, ensuring the designs are safe, compliant and economic.
Team leader:
- Lead a team of Structural and Civil Engineers, supporting the business, team and colleagues to achieve maximum potential
- Manage the team effectively with adherence to commercial performance and resource management via productivity and time methods
- Support the Associates and Directors, linking effectively and proactively with other teams within Concertus
- Work proactively and flexibly to support delivery across the service with commercial and solution focus
- Take ownership for own personal development
- Be an authority on Structural Engineering matters in the team and the business

Customer service:
- Provide an efficient and business-like point of contact. This includes responding to internal and external enquiries and (via face to face, telephone, email and virtual meeting platforms e.g. Microsoft Teams)
- Lead conversations with clients
- Deliver a consistent and professional level of customer service at all times to Clients, and other practices within the industry
- Excellence in advice towards design quality and the Built Environment
- Provide initial point of escalation for issues both internally and externally to support the team, the business and the clients
Business strategy:
- Lead the Structural Engineering team strategy for the business
- Develop and deliver a team business plan linked to the Concertus strategic business plan
- To have a sound understanding of the Concertus strategic business plan, providing support accordingly
- Cultivate new business clients and retain existing clients
Business delivery:
- Develop and deliver new processes for the team
- Manage effectively Sub-Contractors and Consultant Partners
- React and resolve issues which arise during all stages of a project
- Have a good knowledge of Legislation, Policies, Good Practice and Guidance and apply this to the Studio and Business
- Ensuring projects are completed on budget and to schedule
- Preparing scheme designs with costings, programmes for completion of projects and specification of works
- Organising documents for tender and advising on appointing contractors, designers and procurement routes for a project
- Undertake feasibility, concept and detail structural engineering design and checking
- Organise and undertake structural inspections
- Commission specialist surveys
- Ensure building regulation approvals are obtained
- Prepare and check reports
- Create and check engineering drawings using CAD packages and sketches for drafting
- Assessing the environmental impact and risks connected to design decisions
- Assessing the Health and Safety impact and risks connected to design decisions
- Managing, directing and monitoring progress during each phase of a project
- Monitoring and inspecting work undertaken by contractors
Communication:
- Create a positive first impression of Concertus and deal with all contacts professionally
- Manage the relationship with the client and stakeholders
- Communicate with all staff efficiently

It’s essential you have:
- A relevant degree or proven experience in Structural Engineering, including being professionally chartered with I Struct E
- Experience in structural design working in a multi-disciplined environment, acquisition
- Knowledge of civil engineering
- A comprehensive knowledge of building regulations with an understanding of planning legislation and health and safety
- Effective communication skills across a range of contacts
- Ability to work effectively under pressure
- You will be a highly experienced professional with strong interpersonal and organisational skills, including attention to detail and multitasking
- You will have team management experience and be able to demonstrate leadership competencies
- Excellent problem solving skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
BIM roles and responsibilities:
- Ensuring Asset Information requirements and/or MIDP requirements set out in the Employers Information Requirements and delivered on a BIM project.
- Enable reliable information exchange through a common data environment
- Enable integration and co-ordination of information within information model.
- Configure information for project outputs
- Assure delivery of information exchanges
- Confirm supplier’s ability to deliver information requirements
- Co-ordinated delivery of all design information
- Manage information development and information approvals

- Overall Lead for configuration management
- Production of design outputs related to a discipline specific, package-based or time-based task.
- Direct the production of task information in compliance with standards and methods.
- Direct the production of task information using agreed systems.
- Manage spatial co-ordination on behalf of task team.
- Propose resolutions to co-ordination clashes
- Accept / reject information exchanges within the common data Environment
- Oversee team to ensure compliance of their job responsibilities
