Handover of multi-million community hub in Mildenhall reaches completion

Work on the new multi-million-pound public services hub in Mildenhall – combining education, health, leisure, and community facilities on one site – has now reached a significant phase in its journey. The construction of this unique community vision is now complete, enabling the continuing phased opening of the facility to the public.

The construction and project management team, including representatives from R G Carter, Currie and Brown, and Concertus Design and Property Consultants, met on site to mark the completion of this scheme.

Bringing together a new school, pre-school facility, leisure facilities, a health centre, Citizens Advice, Job Centre and a library, Mildenhall Hub will also provide office space for Suffolk Police, West Suffolk Council, Suffolk County Council, the NHS and other public sector partners.  Additionally, the hub will include two new swimming pools, a gym, 3G pitches, fitness studio and a sports hall.

James Wilson, Director at R G Carter, leading construction contractors at the Hub said: “This has been an exciting project for us to be involved in and we are delighted to be able to deliver this innovative development. It’s always a great feeling to hand over a project that matches the client’s vision for the very best services and support that will make a real impact to the local community.”

Working collaboratively throughout the development alongside R G Carter on the construction of the Hub, were Project Management Consultants, Currie and Brown and Lead Designers Concertus.

Grant Rix, Associate Director at Currie and Brown said: “We are delighted that the Mildenhall Hub has begun to open to the public and are excited to see this new integrated way of working become a reality for the benefit of the local community. It has been a pleasure to work on such a unique, complex and forward-thinking project, one that everyone involved in its delivery can be proud of”.

Charles Coulson, Associate Director at Concertus Design and Property Consultants said: “We are excited to see the completion of the Mildenhall Hub. After being involved from the initial stages of the project, with the development of the original business case, through to the Project’s delivery onsite. The design team have worked closely with the wider project team to ensure the client’s and stakeholder’s requirements, as discussed during the early engagement sessions, have been incorporated into the finished project.

The completed hub provides fantastic facilities for the residents and wider community of Mildenhall and demonstrates the benefits of shared facilities for other organisations to consider in the future.”

The Hub has been funded by West Suffolk Council, the Education and Skills Funding Agency, Suffolk County Council, Academy Transformation Trust, Sport England and Suffolk Constabulary and the total cost of the project is over £40m.

Cllr Jo Rayner, Cabinet Member for Community Hubs at West Suffolk Council said: “The Hub is about the communities that we represent not just in Mildenhall, but the surrounding villages as well, so I am delighted for them that construction on this exciting new building and the improved facilities that it brings, is now complete.”

The Mildenhall Library opened at the Hub earlier this month, while both Mildenhall College Academy and the leisure facilities, managed by Abbeycroft Leisure, will open on Monday 14th June. Other facilities and services will open under a rolling programme over the summer.
