Mildenhall Hub Interior Fit-out

The Brief:
Spread across the town in Mildenhall, many of the diverse public sector buildings were reaching the end of their design lives. We were appointed to produce a master plan, creating a single site hub for the town’s public services.

The Scope:
Our Interior Designer provided full optional appraisals, incorporating the existing public sector sites across Mildenhall. This building includes an academy, leisure centre, the NHS services, offices, library, café, soft play area and a Council Chamber. Originating with the master planning; we were commissioned to progress to RIBA Stage 4. We are now on site with the project and due to complete in 2020. The Mildenhall Hub project is a unique project, set to become a national exemplar model for towns across the UK.

Alongside the design of the building, we were appointed under a separate project to undertake a Category B fit-out to the library, café, Council Chamber and office areas. This included specification and installation of the furniture and fixtures as well as selection of final finishes, wayfinding signage and branding. We worked closely alongside a variety of stakeholders and key partners in engagement sessions to establish and tease out the clients’ brief and requirements. Due to the quantity and wide variety of end users involved in the project, it was fundamental to maintain a cohesive design, whilst addressing individual stakeholder requirements.

The Result:
The library and café atrium provides a space to celebrate connectivity – a busy hub in the heart of the building. This atrium was carefully designed around a central circulation route; beginning from the public entrance of the building and joining the leisure centre, office and Academy entrances. A central circulation route was fundamental to the design and led the final layout and location of the furniture and fixtures. The library and café area is open plan and features hints of Scandinavian design whilst incorporating accents of warm subtle colour and natural textures. Designed around a bespoke play and shelving space for children, the central positioning of the children’s library aids passive supervision. A variety of furniture and fixtures provide differing seating and dining options which can be used for a multitude of activities such as dining, reading, informal meetings and agile working.

Mildenhall Hub’s office space accommodates 132 employees and incorporates open plan work areas, a large break-out space, flexible meeting spaces and collaborative areas. By using differing muted colours and finishes, the circulation routes are defined to provide a sense of direction. The look and feel of the space allude to a refined Scandinavian theme.
