There is no denying that Concertus Design & Property Consultants has undergone a massive transformation since it started trading in April 2013. Now in its fourth year, the business is well on track to achieving the goals they set out in their five-year strategic plan.

“The way we think about ourselves and also others, are things that haven’t changed fundamentally since we launched in April 2013.” Managing Director, Andrew Rowe explained.

“In our first year of trading, we established a vision that focused on our ethos of working collaboratively with all stakeholders, and our aim, to provide quality in our design and property advice to ensure we create effective and sustainable built environments.”

The result is a multi-disciplinary business working across nine areas; Architectural and Landscape Design, Building Surveying, Carbon Management and Building Services, as well as Civil & Structural Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Estates and Project Management.

Over the last few years, the size of the Concertus team has shown the most dramatic growth with the number of employees nearly doubling. So, whilst Concertus is still located in Suffolk County Council’s Endeavour House in central Ipswich, it won’t be long before the 1expanding workforce will need to relocate to new premises. A move that will give them the potential to expand to meet the increasing opportunities to do business with both the private and public sectors, inside and outside of Suffolk.

“Our plan has always been to continue to develop a more well-balanced client portfolio and to enable business growth, by incorporating further expertise in areas that compliment and are a ‘good fit’ with our existing capabilities.” Andrew continued.

“This was the main reason behind our acquisition of The Energy Practice earlier this year; a move that has extended our range of expertise to include the provision of low carbon and energy innovation.”

Bringing new blood into the business is also a focus and Concertus is always looking out for talented new people to join the team.

“Nurturing our own ‘home grown’ talent is particularly important and being able to play a key role in a young person’s professional development is very satisfying.” Andrew said.

“So, in addition to the skilled, knowledgeable and experienced individuals we have in our team, we have a number who we are supporting as they take their early steps on their career ladder. This includes six employees who are in Graduate/Trainee roles and studying part-time at London Southbank, Oxford Brookes and Anglia Ruskin University.

“As well as the six undergraduates, we also currently have eight trainees in programmes that are structured, so that the individuals can learn the appropriate skills and work towards achieving a professional qualification. In support of this, our more experienced members of staff act as mentors, equipping the trainees with the knowledge they need to put what they are learning into practice.” Andrew explained.

24-year old Gulsah Cifci is a Trainee Quantity Surveyor and joined the business in August. She said: “The fact that Concertus is a multi-disciplinary practice really allows me to understand all aspects of the construction and design process. As a trainee, this is rewarding because I am able to gain a wide understanding of everything that goes on. It’s a great team here and a great environment to work in.”
