Cromwell Community College

The Brief:
We were asked to provide landscape design through RIBA stages 2-6 for a new 1FE primary school and pre-school on the existing secondary school campus. In addition to these services, our Landscape Architects needed to design the alterations to the existing school’s hard and soft landscape (as a result of building works).

The Scope:
The landscape design had to achieve a BREEAM 2018 very good standard and adhere to the Cambridge Green Guide. We coordinated the team response to the biodiversity enhancement planning condition and worked with ecologists to provide habitat enhancement, a landscape management plan, soft works and planting detailing. Seating areas, cycle shelters and bin stores were incorporated into the design.

During the planning phase, objections from nearby residents were raised. Our Landscape Architects put forward hand drawn sketches showing options for boundary treatment (of a bund with habitat planting) which provided the necessary biodiversity enhancement in a sympathetic manner. The bund was designed to reduce the amount of subsoil being transported from the site and to provide a school amphitheatre.

The Result:
Planning consent, including the biodiversity enhancement, has recently been gained. Having issued the construction package, we are now looking forward to working alongside the construction team as the project develops on site.
